Brian Ward taking over John Hawks Pub

After 40 years, it was announced today that John Hawks Pub, a Milwaukee Landmark, will be soon be getting a new owner

Robert Bell, John Hawk’s founder he has agreed to sell his business to Brian Ward, the owner of Ward’s House of Prime in downtown Milwaukee so he can retire in early May. Bell feels that Ward, who has been actively involved in every aspect of the restaurant industry since the age of 15, is the perfect person to continue Hawk’s legacy in Milwaukee.

“I’m honored that Robert has the confidence in me to continue the legacy he built here in Milwaukee and I’m looking forward to updating it to make it my own while keeping its original integrity,” says Ward. “John Hawks is a Milwaukee landmark and it’s great to be leading its rebirth for future success.”

Ward says he is excited about the purchase is planning on changing the restaurant’s current menu to feature many delicious homemade soups, fresh healthy salads and hearty sandwiches along variety traditional English fare.

Ward is planning on renovating the entire facility to give it more a contemporary English feel including adding more booths to the dining area and several large screen tvs to the bar area to make it more of a lounge area where people want to hang out. Ward also plans on adding many English and European beers for Milwaukee’s beer connoisseurs to enjoy as well as unique, upscale brands of scotch and whiskey.

History of John Hawks Pub:
John Hawks Pub opened its doors at 607 North Broadway in downtown Milwaukee in 1971. The pub quickly became a popular downtown establishment and in 1973 Mayor Henry Meier awarded the pub the city’s Beautification Award.  In 1986, Hawks was remodeled and enlarged to accommodate 275 patrons.

John Hawks made a historic move to Milwaukee’s most prestigious address, 100 E. Wisconsin Ave. in September of 1990. In 1991, the Riverwalk Patio opened and Milwaukee’s 1st Riversplash Festival was held. The attention was on the patio in 1993, when a duck name Gwen made it her nesting home. Hawks received The Gertie Riverwalk Award in 1993 “For contribution and support to make Milwaukee Riverwalk District a Better Place to Visit, Work and Live.”
